The Wye Princess \u2013 Community River Boat Charity is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit organisation based on the River Wye. Our mission is to make the river accessible to everyone \u2014 especially older adults, people with disabilities, and local community groups who might otherwise be unable to enjoy the experience of being on the water. We are currently restoring The Wye Princess, a former passenger vessel, to become a fully accessible community river boat. Once launched, she will offer safe, inclusive trips along the River Wye, operated entirely by trained volunteers. The renovation includes essential structural repairs, installation of new safety systems, accessibility features such as improved seating and boarding areas, and the fitting of a weatherproof canopy to ensure passenger comfort in all conditions. We are working closely with marine engineers and local partners to ensure that every stage of the rebuild meets high standards of safety, sustainability, and reliability.<\/p>
Our vision is to create a welcoming, inclusive space on the water that promotes wellbeing, social connection, and a shared appreciation of nature. When The Wye Princess launches, she will provide hundreds of people each year with the chance to reconnect with the river and each other. Trips will be free or low-cost, ensuring that financial circumstances never prevent participation. Beyond the pleasure of being on the water, our journeys will offer companionship, conversation, and a renewed sense of belonging \u2014 all within the tranquil setting of the River Wye. We are currently seeking financial support and community sponsorship to complete the final stages of the restoration and prepare The Wye Princess for her maiden voyage. Funding will allow us to complete the canopy and weather protection system, finalise safety and accessibility improvements, and meet the necessary insurance and certification requirements. It will also enable us to purchase vital safety equipment, support volunteer training, and develop outreach programmes to engage local groups and schools. Every contribution brings us one step closer to launching this unique community asset and ensuring its sustainable future for years to come.<\/p>
Once operational, The Wye Princess will be self-sustaining through modest passenger donations, community sponsorships, and fundraising events. The charity plans to collaborate with local organisations, care homes, schools, and disability groups to offer regular trips and tailored experiences.
